Naloxone/Narcan is a safe, effective, easy-to-use medicine that works if administered within the first few minutes of an overdose. The medication works by binding to the same receptors in the brain as opioids, countering their effects. Safe Streets celebrates the FDA's latest decision to make the nasal spray available over the counter. Increasing access to naloxone is a step in the right direction.
Affordability, education, modern public health interventions, and access to quality healthcare are also just as imperative. As always, Safe Streets will continue to provide free naloxone for distribution to to the community as well as fentanyl test strips, drug disposal bags, and other resources.
